Avoiding Empty Nest Syndrome

Empty Nest Syndrome Season is here…

It’s Empty Nest season, which means that the kids are back at college, or the summer visits from your adult children are over, and you’re feeling that empty nest anxiety.😢

The house is empty, quiet and clean. And the pain in your heart from missing your children is palpable. How do you avoid Empty Nest Syndrome?💔

What do you do now that the house is empty an quiet?

What do you do now? While it’s ok to feel sad and to miss your kids, it’s not ok to lie on the couch eating bon bons and watching bad daytime TV for the rest of your life! (Ok—maybe for just a little while 😉 )

Remember that Rome wasn’t build in a day, and neither will the sadness and loneliness magically disappear once you get off the couch, turn off the TV and throw the candy wrappers away. Time for some Empty Nest advice!🤔

3 Tips to get you moving from funk to fun

So how do you begin to get out of your Empty Nest funk? Here are 3 things you can do right now to get moving from empty nest anxiety to empty nest blessed:

  1. Acknowledge and Accept: Acknowledge that you’re sad that the nest is empty. And accept that it’s a stage of life, but that the sadness doesn’t have to last forever. Close your eyes, take 3 deep breaths in through your nose and out through your mouth, and repeat this phrase: “this too shall pass.” 🗣
  2. Be grateful. Gratitude is a wonderful healer. And though you may not feel very grateful right now, think about your blessings for a moment.  Think about how grateful you are that you had the opportunity to raise your children, and that your children had you as their mother. And now think about how grateful you are that, after spending a couple of decades focused on your children, you now have the opportunity to focus on you and your life!👍 Take 3 more deep breaths, repeating, “thank you for the opportunity to be a mom, and thank you for the opportunity to now focus on me.”🙏
  3. Raise your energy level. Get up and get out. Go for a walk and get your blood moving. And notice the beauty and life around you. Your energy level and mood will be elevated. Breathe deeply and smile.🚶‍♀️

It’s time to break free from Empty Nest Syndrome!!! 🦅As one of my favorite authors, Dr. Suess, says:

You’re off to Great Places!

Today is your day!

Your mountain is waiting,

So… get on your way!
